Thank God my computer has a Spam Filter that keeps my inbox from being flooded with nonsense and distractions. This leaves me free to focus only on the important issues that require my attention and follow up. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a Spam filter in the spirit, especially since our thought life is the hub or computer that regulates our actions and what we give our attention to. You will be happy to know that we do: It’s called PRAYER!
Proverbs 4:23 admonishes us to “Guard our hearts with all diligence; for out of it (the heart, the mind, the inner man, the will, emotions) are the issues of life.” This proverb gives us explicit instruction to be on guard against SPAM that will try to infiltrate our thoughts and guide our actions. But if you are like me, you will find yourself asking “HOW Do I guard my heart??” Philippians 4:6-7 provides us the answer: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” The word Keep in this sentence is the Greek word Phroureo: to guard, protect as by a military guard either to prevent hostile invasion or to keep the inhabitants of an invaded city from flight. In other words, when we pray in the spirit, we invite the peace of God to act as a barrier against the enemies attempt to invade our thoughts and influence our behavior. If we forfeit prayer (talking to God about everything and listening for a response), we forfeit the peace of God (tranquility of mind and exemption from rage; harmony, safety, security) and we forfeit our “SPAM” protection!
Philippians 4:8 tells us that we have the further responsibility of monitoring our own thoughts. Just as some unwanted emails get through even with a Spam Filter, some evil thoughts will press through the wall of our peace protected mind. We are human after all! We have the task of monitoring and deleting unwanted “Spam thoughts” quickly. God-honoring thoughts must meet the following criteria: they must be true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of a good report, and provoke love and praise. If they don’t …hit the delete button without hesitation!
I admonish you to pray often and always in the spirit. If you find yourself thinking thoughts you know are contrary to the word of God (thoughts of anger, revenge, hostility, fear, etc.); I challenge to you to confess it to your heavenly father, ask for his intervention, request his leading and thank Him in advance for answering. Watch your life, your attitude and your actions begin to change to more closely reflect HIM.
I love you!
