Whatcha Scared For? God said, “BE NOT AFRAID!”
Fear = fear, terror, reverence in the Greek and is defined as panic flight, fear, the causing of fear, terror. As we look around in our world today there are so many circumstances, situations, and reasons to feel fearful and afraid, but God commands us on today to be not discouraged nor afraid for He is with us people of God. In this text, Moses assignment of leading God’s people our of Egyptian bondage has been accomplished. Moses has gone as far as God had allowed Him to go. He is now dead, and God is in search of another leader to lead His people to their new home in the land of promise.
Who better than Joshua to lead God’s people. Joshua had already been trained and prepared by God for the journey through his servant Moses. Let’s listen to Numbers 27:18-23: The Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him, 19 and cause him to stand before Eleazar, the priest and before all the assembly, and command in their sight. 20 You will put some of your majesty on him so that all the assembly of the children of Israel will listen. 21 He will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will ask for him about the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his word will they go out, and at his word they will come in, both he and all the children of Israel with him, even all the assembly.” 22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and he took Joshua, and he caused him to stand before Eleazar, the priest and before all the assembly. 23 And he laid his hands on him and commanded him as the Lord spoke by the hand of Moses.
Even though Joshua was being prepared for his unknown future work assignment, he still needed courage and strength to take it on. He could not do it alone, and God did not expect him too. It was God who was gonna do the work through him. All that was required of Joshua was obedience and trust in the Lord his God. Fear somehow always seems to presents itself as the first opportunity to any task that will require us to not do it in our own strength, but in God’s strength. God knew Joshua was fearful and needed courage and strength. The enemies of God people were currently in possession of the land, and some of them were giants too. Joshua knew this because he was one of the spies who came back with a good report saying “we can possess it.”
When the time came to take possession of the land, God personally spoke one on one to Joshua these words of comfort in this text “Have not I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” When God made His “Covenant” with Abraham, God gave me a 3 fold promise for him and his descendants that is found in Genesis 12. (1) The Land Promise: “A land that I will show you.” (2.) The National Promise: “A great nation.” (3) The Spiritual Promise: “All the families of the earth shall be blessed.” God had already made the promise to Abraham that the land was gonna be given to his descendants. It was just a matter of possessing it. Yes, the enemy was in the land, but God was gonna give it to His people. God was gonna fight for them and with them.
People of God, we too find ourselves with opportunities to fear when God calls us to work for him. The key to remember is that God is not calling us to do it. He wants to do it through us. This is where our obedience, trust, and faith in God to see us through has to kick in.
People of God, perhaps you are reading this blog, and you have been gripped with fear concerning something that God may is requiring of you do, or maybe even on a personal level with your children, bills, finances, marriage, relationships, work, future, etc. Whatever it is that may be causing us to attempt to be fearful and afraid, the Lord our God speaks these words to us too “be strong and courageous, do not be afraid for I am with you.”
People of God, whatever it is that you may be facing on today, the Lord your God says to you “be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid for the Lord your God is with you.”
People of God, we MUST trust our God on today for His word is true. His promise is to be with us always, even unto the end.
People of God, whatever it is that the Lord has assigned to your hands, trust Him in the process to carry you through to the completion of it for He has a track record of being faithful and true to His Word.
People of God, “BE NOT AFRAID” nor dismay, but be strong and courageous for God is with you!
